Dia de los defunctos

The actual Day of the Dead (Dia de los Defunctos) was today, and most businesses closed to allow their employees to go pay their respects at the cemetery. We have learned to appreciate the architectural and sculptural beauty that can be found in cemeteries in Latin countries. Specifically we are reminded of the grandiose structures in Buenos Aires. Though a smaller scale, Granada’s cemetery was impressive. It was packed with people today. There was a quiet but busy scene, with food stalls of peeled oranges, fried plantain chips, grilled chicken, cotton candy and most prominently rows of flower sellers. A bit remindful of the entrance to India’s temples, flowers stacked up in heaps of color.
