I have been sick since Sunday night with a bad sore throat, congestion etc… and have been doctoring myself with daily raw garlic (yes am sure I do stink by now) and tea made from the leaves of Gauyaba and Jicaro trees (at the advice of Claudia who is a great masseuse and has also studied Oriental medicine.) I have managed to stay afloat but am getting impatient with lying around…and have decided to get a doctor’s opinion. Having really low energy, the thought of shlepping to Vivian Pellas, the private hospital in Managua, does not sound appealing. Even the thought of going to the doctor behind the pharmacy, who is good, but requires a short taxi ride and maybe a wait, is not appealing.
House calls…. a lost art?
Ahh, this is where I remember I have the phone number of Dr. Blanco who does house calls. Time to try him out.. After all, having a doctor who will come to the house is most definitely a plus. Where do doctors do house calls these days? Not in the US that is for sure. Growing up in South Africa as a child we had a doctor who did house calls. I had an intense dislike for him, he was to me a dirty old man, who did not know what he was doing. Still, I do like the concept of having a doctor come to the house – it is convenient when you feel like shit!
Dr Blanco arrives with his little black bag and quickly determines that I have a throat infection and that I should take antibiotics so it does not develop into bronchitis. Makes sense to me.. He is very pleasant, very informative and explains how in hot and humid climates it is very easy for bacteria to grow. I should come to his clinic for a throat culture in ten days. Turns out that in addition to making house calls and running a clinic, he is a surgeon at Vivian Pellas. Now come on, how many surgeons do YOU know in any country that make house calls for twenty dollars??

Hope you get better soon. Remember to take probiotics (acidophilus/jarrodophilus) with your antibiotics….!!
hope you are getting better… sore throat is not a lot of fun its just uncomfortable and difficult to swallow.
usually, i would take the Nim Jiom Cough Syrup (www.geocities.jp/ninjiom_hong_kong/index_e.htm ) which has a thick consistency formulation. it coats the throat and includes herbs that are particularly good for that application.
i hope it works on you as well.
Thanks…. P
